Auto (2018-ongoing) explores the intertwined histories of the West and Central Asia through the lens of labor and global trade in the automotive repair industry. Inspired by my father's journey as a migrant worker in a Detroit collision shop after the Soviet Union's dissolution, I began photographing his workplace in 2018. This project expanded as I traced the connections of his coworkers back to auto shops in their home countries, including Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. These global enclaves, shaped by the flow of remittances, labor, and used parts, redefine our notions of proximity and community. By extending my work to Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brighton Beach—cities now experiencing new migration currents from Central Asia and the Caucasus—Auto highlights the fluidity of migrant communities and challenges traditional concepts of home and belonging in a rapidly globalizing world.
